About CfA

Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian (CfA) = Harvard College Observatory (HCO) + Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO)

CFA Logo equals Harvard Shield plus sign SAO Logo

Your appointment is with Harvard University which means specific items will pertain to you that don’t to someone at the SAO and vice versa. This site is meant to help you navigate the administrative aspect of your time here at the CfA.  Here is a high level a snapshot of what Harvard University is comprised of (png) and a snapshot of what the Smithsonian Institution has to offer (png).

Scientific Divisions and Departments at the CfA

There are a number of research divisions at the CfA and many people have affiliations with more than one division. Most divisions have a mix of both SAO and Harvard researchers and staff.

Central Engineering (Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory)

Central Engineering located at CDP is the primary source for the development of scientific instrumentation for the Center for Astrophysics. Central Engineering staff conceive, design, fabricate, test, integrate/install, operate, and maintain state-of-the-art instruments for astronomical and astrophysical data collection--both ground based and space borne--and the ground support and laboratory equipment required to assemble, test, calibrate, and protect them. Test laboratories and their abilities can be found at this link (requires VPN or network access)external link. There is also a Model Shop that fabricates parts. If you need a PO for their services – please see Christine Benoit.
